A junior golf competition concluded at the Golf Club at Red Rock with an estimated economic impact of $384,634 for the Rapid City area. The four-day event, held from Sept. 3 to Sept. 6, served as a catalyst for spending at local hotels, restaurants, and retailers.
Visit Rapid City reported that the tournament generated 444 hotel room nights. Visitors spent an estimated $152,471 during their stay. The total figure includes direct spending and the broader economic ripple effects attributed to the event's presence in the community.
The competition featured 78 players hailing from 22 U.S. states and three countries. Domico Rodriguez, executive director of the Rapid City Sports Commission, noted that sporting events provide a dual benefit by introducing new visitors to the area while injecting revenue into the local economy. The organization cited the event as part of a wider strategy to promote the Black Hills as a destination for sports tourism.
Beyond immediate financial gains, the tournament expanded the city's digital reach. Social media content from the event was viewed by more than 1 million people across Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok. This visibility supports the area's goal of establishing itself as a hub for competitive youth sports.
Cole Durham won the boys division with a score of 7-under-par 209. Lauren Richardson claimed the girls title at 1-under-par 215. The American Junior Golf Association and the Rapid City Sports Commission organized the event jointly.
The partnership aims to sustain visitor spending and support local businesses. Visit Rapid City stated that attracting such events is central to its efforts to grow the regional tourism sector.
