Michelle Hooper is exiting her position as executive vice president of marketing at Searchlight Pictures. The departure ends a 20-year tenure that spanned the studio’s most prolific era in awards history.

Since joining the company in 2006, Hooper oversaw publicity, awards strategy, and creative marketing efforts. Her work contributed to nearly 200 Oscar nominations for the studio. Searchlight converted 49 of those nominations into wins. These victories include Best Picture honors for “Nomadland,” “The Shape of Water,” “Birdman,” “12 Years a Slave,” and “Slumdog Millionaire.”

The studio also secured more than 130 Golden Globe nominations during Hooper’s time in the role. In addition to the five Best Picture winners mentioned above, Searchlight received 15 other Best Picture nominations at the Globes. Hooper was leading campaign efforts for the films “Wild Horse Nine” and “Behemonth!” during the current awards season.

A longtime colleague described Hooper as a strong leader with keen insight into film trends. The colleague noted that Hooper could effectively close campaigns by gathering real-time feedback. “It’s a loss for the studio, but I guarantee you it will be another’s gain,” the colleague said.

Before joining Searchlight, Hooper worked in television publicity. She served as the director of entertainment communications at CBS Entertainment, where she helped shape the publicity strategy for “Survivor.” She previously spent four years as the vice president of entertainment publicity at Fox Broadcast. There, she managed campaigns for “The Simpsons,” “Arrested Development,” and “American Idol.”

Variety featured Hooper in its 2025 Women’s Impact Report alongside Rebecca Kearey, DanTram Nguyen, and Katie Goodson. The report noted that their collective marketing strategy led to 10 Academy Award nominations for “A Complete Unknown” and “A Real Pain.” Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “A Real Pain.”

In a joint statement, Searchlight executives credited the studio’s willingness to take creative risks and its relationships with filmmakers for helping the company succeed. The team stated that they trust audiences still desire films that entertain, challenge, and provoke.
